Do forgive me,

...I've been slow on the bargains lately. Well, I have a good excuse. We're in the process of gathering quotes for the home we're building. We're saving tons by building it ourselves and not hiring a contractor. Luckily, my husband knows what he's doing. I should start a blog for it ... it's a huge project and I could blog about it everyday. Don't really have time for that, so I won't. ;-)

Anyway, I do have a bargain tip if you're planning on building or redecorating your kitchen. Look up cabinet companies and then when you locate a dealer online, find a location that does not have a showroom. These 'locations' are most likely Mom & Pop type businesses that work out of their homes. This equals HUGE savings...I know this because I'm that type of business myself (wedding biz). Well, I found an awesome cabinet man (I think he should be a super hero) and ended up saving ... drum roll, please ... a WHOPPING $60,000 on the oh-so-fabulous cabinets we're going to purchase. They are gorgeous. We really didn't have to scrimp on the type of cabinets we want since the savings are so great. Now, you may be thinking that this sounds too good to be true, well, it's not. Showrooms (like Home Depot, or custom cabinet stores) tack on unbelievable amounts of fees and charges. They also have the power to triple, quadruple or make up any price they want. Just do some homework before picking a vendor to make sure they have a great reputation. Also, you must like the person you're dealing with. You're going to be spending a lot of time and money on them. :-)

Good luck on the house building.

My parents kind of did the same thing. They paid someone to do some of the shelling in of the house and then they did the drywall, sanding, paint, and a lot of other things themselves. They also hired a local guy to build their cabinets. They saved a lot of money that way!

P.S. Stop by my blogs for the blog parties.
