Slow Cooking Thursday - August 28

I don't quite get the name of this recipe...Bachelor's Stew. Reason is, it has more than three ingredients and I doubt *most* bachelors would go the the trouble to cook something with more than three. ;-) When I saw tapioca in this one, I was so curious to try it. Let me just tell you...it's FAAAABULOUS! It has a slight sweet flavor that keeps your fork diving on your plate for more. I'd like to rename it Sweet Stew....so I'm going to...

Sweet Stew

2lb beef chuck, cut into 1 to 2 inch cubes
1/3 cup dry bread crumbs
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 large onion, cut into eighths
3 carrots, pared, split lengthwise and cut into strips
4 celery stalks, cut into 1 inch pieces
1 teaspoon leaf basil
1/3 cup quick-cooking tapioca
1 can (4 oz) sliced mushrooms, undrained
1 teaspoon Kitchen Bouquet
2 cans (10 1/4 oz each) condensed tomato soup
1 cup beef broth or water (I use broth)

Wipe beef cubes well. Combine bread crumbs with salt and pepper and toss with beef. Place coated beef cubes in slow cooker and add remaining ingredients; stir well. Cover and cook on low setting for 10-12 hours (only took mine 7-8 hours) or on high for 3-5 hours.

6 servings (about 3 quarts)

Yeah, I don't get why it was originally named Bachelor's Stew either. Makes no sense. I like your new name for it. It sounds really good. I'll have to try it next week. I need some new dishes. My family is getting tired of the same stuff I always fix.

I would love to be in your family. All that good cookin' you're doing!
This one sounds very good. The tapioca makes me curious, too. Maybe I'll try my chef hat on and fix it.

I cant wait till cooler weather to start crockpoting also.

A tip on picking out your flatware... if you use a dishwasher, take in to consideration how the flatware is made. Mine has tapered handles and fall through the holes in the basket which makes the drawer hang up. It's really annoying.

Oooh! So glad you dropped by my blog. Thanks for the color support! And I don't know whether or not to be jealous of you for having a Pottery Barn right by your house, or feel bad that you too are tormented by the Porter desk every day. Ha! Ha! I'm going to try to get at least one of my projects started this weekend. LOVE your blog!
